The Former President was initially rumoured to have perfected plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress from his party, the All Progressives Congress.

He was reportedly the anointed candidate for the Presidential ticket by the so-called cabal within the Presidency especially in the period leading up the Presidential Primary of both the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress.

Events before, during and after the Presidential Primary of both parties however put paid to the rumour and he has remained with his party.

He is also ion the vanguard of trying to resolve the Crisis of confidence within the ranks of the Peoples Democratic party that has led to the emergence of a splinter group of governors known as the G-5 and other leaders who are now collectively known as the Integrity Group.

He was called upon to intervene in the matter by former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, a few weeks back though the governors have not shown any signs that they will be backing down anytime soon on the issue.
