Seventh seed Kei Nishikori of Japan has survived a scare to reach the third round of the US Open on Wednesday.
Nishikori beat world number 108, Bradley Klahn 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and 7-5 to book a place in the next round.
The Japanese player was 5-1 up in the fourth set and had four match points before eventually overcoming the world number 108.
World number 23 Grigor Dimitrov is also through after 12th seed Borna Coric of Croatia withdrew from the competition with a back strain
18-time grand slam winner, Roger Federer, also advanced in his quest for 19th title
Federer also survived a scare to defeat Damir Dzhumur to reach the third round.
Federer lost the first set 6-3 before taking the other three sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-4
In the women’s draw, fifth seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine has eliminated former champion, Venus williams.
Venus saved five match-points in an epic 17-minute ninth game of the second set, but it was not sufficient as Svitolina eventually overcame the two-time champion 6-4, 6-4 to book a place in the third round of the US Open.
Also third seed Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic is through to the third round after a straight-set win over Mariam Bolkvadze of Georgia.
The 27-year-old Pliskova dominated the world number 102 Bolkvadze to win 6-1, 6-4.
