The United Nations says it urgently needs 1 billion Dollars to scale up intervention in Nigeria’s North East. The money is meant to meet the needs of about 7 million internally displaced persons.
Dooshima Abu reports that it’s Kallon’s first engagement with the local media in Nigeria after arriving the country two months ago and his task as a humanitarian coordinator has had him constantly on his touring parts of the North east .
He has set up this meeting to bring to fore the worsening humanitarian situation in the states affected by the insurgency.
Millions of those chased out of their ancestral homes are yet to get their lives back and the living conditions of those living in displaced camps is appalling.
He said the UN needs more funds to assist those affected by the crisis
He also warned against plans by the Borno State government to shut down the IDP Camps.
Kallon pledges that the UN will do everything possible to assist the country in addressing crisis in the North East but urges government to live up to its responsibilities.
