Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have attacked a mosque in the Dadinkowa community of the Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing six worshippers and injuring three others in what security authorities described as a reprisal assault following a failed ambush on a military convoy.
The gunmen stormed the mosque on Wednesday evening while worshippers were observing prayers and reportedly opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic and chaos within the community.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kebbi State, Bashir Usman, said the attack was carried out in retaliation for an earlier confrontation between the terrorists and troops of the Nigerian Army under the 8 Division.
According to him, the violence followed an attempted ambush on February 24 targeting the General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, and Commander, Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Bemgha Koughna, who was en route to visit frontline troops deployed in the state.
The GOC’s convoy reportedly came under heavy gunfire near Maiyama Hill, but troops responded with superior firepower, neutralising five attackers and successfully foiling the ambush.
