The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said that addressing Nigeria’s security challenges remains a top priority for President Bola Tinubu.
Idris spoke to journalists on Sunday after meeting the president in Lagos, where Tinubu is observing the Easter celebrations.
He said the president has continued to engage security chiefs in efforts to tackle insecurity and achieve sustainable peace across the country.
“He just came back from Jos, and security is uppermost in his mind. He keeps talking and discussing with the security agencies on how we can find a lasting solution, and collaboration with our regional and international partners to ensure that we bring lasting peace to our country,” Idris said.
The minister added that the Federal Government is also strengthening ties with regional and international partners to address security threats, particularly in the Sahel region.
According to him, Tinubu recently held discussions with Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno as part of broader efforts to coordinate responses to cross-border security challenges.
Idris also conveyed the president’s message to Nigerians, urging unity and patriotism amid ongoing reforms and security efforts.
“He has also called on me to continue to inform Nigerians that he is indeed listening to them, all the observations about what is happening in the country. Mr. President is listening,” he said.
“He’s a keen watcher of events. And as the commander-in-chief, he has asked Nigerians to once again come together, reflect, think deeply about Nigeria, be more patriotic as he works to ensure that issues of security are resolved once and for all.”
Beyond security, the minister noted that the president is encouraged by positive feedback from international stakeholders on Nigeria’s economic reforms.
“He’s also happy with some of the reports that he’s getting from the international development partners, international finance agencies, and rating agencies. They’re all giving Nigeria a pass mark.
“Everybody is seeing that the reforms are actually working in the interest of Nigeria, and Nigeria is finding its place in the comity of nations once again.
“These are all things that Mr. President is very happy about, and he’s going to continue to work to make sure that the reforms actually take hold strongly for the benefit of all Nigerians.”
