Legal Practitioner and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba( san) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari as a matter of urgent national importance to look into the idea of regional autonomy to ensure that Nigeria survives its current challenges.
The renowned legal practitioner gave this advice in an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari where he traced the history of other nations with similar challenges to Nigeria urging the president to take a cue from their experience and how they were able to resolve them.
In his letter, Agbakoba(san) gave examples of nations such as the former Yugoslavia, Checkoslovakia and Russia who have failed to effectively manage their diversity and have broken into different distinct nations of single ethnic groups.
He added that the example of other nations like German which has reunited the former eastern bloc East German and capitalist West Germany is another example of people from a distinct nationality coming together to live in peace and harmony something which is absent in Nigeria.
He posited that the United Kingdom is an example of managed devolution which Nigeria has failed to effectively manage.
He disclosed that regional autonomy is the answer to the nations many challenges as it will help in addressing the issues of development that the current centralised Federal Government has failed badly to do.
He advised President Buhari to immediately commence the process of Constitutional Alteration that will help in addressing issues across the country and stabilize Nigeria.
