A 52-year-old woman, Titilayo Akindele, has reportedly died in an Edo State High Court during a court appearance for allegedly selling illicit drugs.

In a video circulating on social media seen by TVC News on Thursday, Akindele was allegedly being prosecuted by the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

According to the video, the woman collapsed in court during the trial and died, with allegations that the men of the NDLEA made an attempt to flee the scene and abandon the body.

According to ITV, based in Benin, an individual identified as Samuel Akinshola, who claimed to be the late suspect’s son, narrated how he tried getting the deceased out of the NDLEA custody for proper medical attention but failed.

He said, “Yesterday she said she’s not feeling fine. I was begging the officials and offered to pay 500k, but they refused to accept the payment. They insisted that my mother must be taken to the court.”

The NDLEA is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The incident has generated reactions across social media platforms as Nigerians condemned disregard for the rule of law and human rights during the criminal trial.

An X user identified as @Digitalsniper0 wrote, “The question now is, will the agency or officer in charge of the case be charged for murder in some ways, or do they just walk freely?”

@billiano77 wrote, “You see inside court, if she died in the hospital, you see them release a statement that’s not the person who killed her.”
