Some police officers have been taken into custody following an “accidental shooting” that claimed the lives of two passersby in Alagbado area of Lagos State on Friday.
The tragic incident occurred in Alagbado, where the officers were reportedly pursuing suspected internet fraudsters, popularly referred to as “Yahoo boys,” when gunshots were fired.
Lagos police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the development, stating that the Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.
In a statement shared on X, Adebisi disclosed that the affected officers have been disarmed and detained.

She added that the commissioner has directed “adequate deployment of personnel to forestall any breakdown of law and order” in the area.
According to the command, calm has since returned to the community, with assurances that justice will be served and findings of the investigation made public.
However, an eyewitness account circulating online paints a troubling picture. An X user who claimed to have witnessed the incident alleged that the officers, said to be attached to the AIT Division police station, were on stop-and-search duty before the shooting occurred.
The witness claimed the officers “ran away immediately” after shooting the passersby, “leaving the unconscious victims without aid until they gave up the ghost as they couldn’t get help”.
The shooting comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of the state, following a string of cult-related clashes in areas including Iyana-Ipaja, Aboru, Badore, Olokonla, Onipanu and Satellite Town. At least four people have reportedly been killed in the violence, with several others injured.
