Ondo Communities Seek Urgent Government Intervention On Bad Roads

Residents of Iku Quarters and neighbouring communities in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, have appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Federal Government to urgently reconstruct the Awara Water Works–Ikare Stadium Road and the Ikare–Ogbagi-Irun Akoko–Ado Ekiti highway.

They warned that their poor condition is threatening lives and crippling economic activities.

The appeal came during a peaceful protest in Ikare-Akoko, where residents said the roads had become death traps, making movement difficult for motorists, farmers, traders and other road users.

The protesters noted that the Ikare–Ogbagi-Irun Akoko–Ado Ekiti Road provides access to the Ondo State NYSC Orientation Camp in Ikare-Akoko and Mercyland, the burial site of Christ Apostolic Church founder, Saint Moses Orimolade Tunolase, both of which attract thousands of visitors annually.

Carrying placards with messages including “Awara/Ikare-Akoko Stadium Road Has Become a Death Trap” and “Mr Governor, We Are Dying; Our People Can No Longer Go to Farm Because of Bad Roads,” the residents called for immediate government intervention.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the Oniku of Iku, Chief Mukaila Bello, described the protest as a cry for help, saying years of neglect had left the roads in a deplorable state.

“The roads have become a nightmare for commuters and motorists. Our farmers can hardly access their farms, while commercial activities have been severely affected. We are appealing to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Federal Government to urgently intervene before more lives are lost,” Bello said.

He also urged lawmakers representing Ondo North Senatorial District and other stakeholders to support efforts to reconstruct the roads, saying improved infrastructure would enhance economic activities, security and access to key institutions and religious sites in the area.
