Experts on Lassa fever have advised the Nigerian government to standardize infectious control practices to prevent constant death of medical personnel and patients in health facilities during outbreaks. The infectious disease experts disclosed this at a health forum in Abuja by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control on preventing the recurring death of patients and health personnel across the country.
TVC News Senior Correspondent Sumner Sambo reports that at a forum on Lassa fever, medical experts want more investments in funding research against the disease, contact tracing and provision of quality health services for its treatment in Nigeria.
A former World Health Organization expert, Professor Oyewole Tomori said Nigeria’s investment in curtailing lassa fever is poor with funds earlier released to establish a second treatment center in Maiduguri, unaccounted for.
Professor Tomori also says that the country needs to work on improved funding for vaccine preventable diseases rather than waiting for international donors always.
Lassa fever has continued to break out in various parts of Nigeria with many deaths recorded including some medical personnel.
