The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed off several public toilets across Lagos Island following persistent complaints from residents over offensive odours and environmental pollution.
The affected facilities, located in Offin, Balogun, Oke-Arin, and No. 14 Adeniji Adele Road (Olukolu Place), were shut down on Sunday after investigations confirmed that the operations of the toilets were in breach of the state’s environmental laws.

According to the LSWMO, the offensive discharge from these facilities has contributed to cases of waterborne diseases, posing significant health risks to the public.
In a statement, the agency warned that it would continue its crackdown on facilities flouting wastewater regulations and degrading the environment through the indiscriminate discharge of untreated effluent.
Residents were urged to regularly evacuate their septic tanks and soakaway pits, in line with hygiene best practices, as the state government maintains a zero-tolerance stance on environmental infractions.
“The health and safety of our citizens remain a priority,” the agency stressed, reiterating its commitment to enforcing environmental compliance throughout the state.
