The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, has contended that provisions of the Nigerian Constitution permit police stations to restrict visitors from using mobile phones within their premises.
Babaseyi made this clarification while responding to an inquiry on X regarding the legality of the ban, a practice that has become standard at Police Divisional Headquarters across the country.
The inquiry was prompted by Salami Olayiwola Quadri, who took to social media to share his encounter at the Igbeba Police Divisional Headquarters, Ijebu Ode, where he was restricted from using his device.

Quardi asked, “Is it legal to restrict people from entering a police station with their cell phones? Presently, you have to drop your cell phone at the gate/under a tree before entering Igbeba Police Station, Ijebu Ode. Reason I don’t know! PoliceNG Ogun Police NG BenHundeyin.”
Responding to him, Babaseyi said, “Yes, it’s legal to restrict phones in police stations. This ensures the safety of suspects, protects their identities, and prevents operational assets from being compromised. Nigerian laws authorise such measures while upholding suspects’ rights.”
