The Federal Government has launched a targeted distribution of food and nutritional support in Benue State, aimed at assisting vulnerable communities affected by displacement, insecurity, and loss of livelihoods.

The exercise, under the Presidential Initiative for Food and Nutrition Assistance, was led by Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro.

A statement released Friday by Chinyere Ulasi, Head of Information and Public Relations Unit of the ministry, highlighted the humanitarian and strategic dimensions of the intervention.

Dr. Doro described the operation as both an urgent humanitarian response and a step toward integrating emergency assistance with longer-term social protection measures, such as conditional cash transfers and livelihood support through the National Social Register.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Olubunmi Olusanya, emphasized the need for coordinated, data-driven distribution.

“This intervention reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to shock-responsive social protection, improved targeting through the Social Register, and effective last-mile delivery. Our goal is to ensure that assistance reaches intended beneficiaries with dignity and fairness,” he said.

The Governor of Benue, Hyacinth Alia, represented by his Deputy, Sam Ode, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the timely support.

He noted that many communities in the state have endured displacement and destruction of farmlands, exacerbating the need for immediate relief.

A highlight of the distribution was the direct engagement between government officials and recipients. Food and nutrition items were personally handed to internally displaced persons, persons with disabilities, elderly citizens, and other vulnerable groups, including families from Guma Local Government Area.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and collaboration with the state government, with the broader aim of strengthening resilience, restoring livelihoods, and supporting sustainable pathways out of poverty.
