Governor Monday Okpebholo has declared that he would relinquish his position if President Bola Tinubu fails to win re-election in 2027, effectively staking his political future on the president’s second-term bid.

Okpebholo made the statement during a Friday interview on African Independent Television (AIT), where he aligned the performance of his administration in Edo State with the fortunes of the federal government.

The governor dismissed any suggestion that his comment was political grandstanding, describing it instead as a firm endorsement of Tinubu’s leadership and policies.

He maintained that the developmental strides recorded in Edo under his watch reflect the broader direction of the federal administration.

Okpebholo expressed confidence that ongoing infrastructure and social development projects across the state would influence voters’ decisions in 2027.

He said residents would “appreciate” the president’s leadership at the ballot box when the next general elections are held.

“Edo people have not even thanked Tinubu. How they will thank him is through their votes.

“The various projects across the state are the things that will speak for Tinubu and he will win here. Bet me, if he doesn’t win, I will resign as governor.

“There’s no election here for him. I’m a politician, who under-studied Chief Aneni. My style of politics is not thuggery but grassroots,” he said.
