The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has raised alarm over unfolding events in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, urging the global community to uphold the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement released on Sunday, the regional body said it was following developments in Venezuela with deep concern.
ECOWAS noted that while nations have the legitimate right to confront transnational threats such as terrorism and drug trafficking, such actions must remain consistent with international law.

The bloc specifically referenced Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which affirms the obligation of states to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other nations.
ECOWAS also associated itself with a position earlier expressed by the African Union on January 3, 2026, calling for restraint and broad-based dialogue among Venezuelans as a pathway to resolving the country’s challenges.
Reaffirming its support for the Venezuelan people, ECOWAS emphasized the principles of non-interference and national independence, cautioning against any actions that could threaten Venezuela’s territorial unity.
The statement concluded by reiterating ECOWAS’ solidarity with Venezuela, expressing confidence in the ability of its people to determine their future through an inclusive, peaceful, and democratic process.
