The Office of the Minister of Defence has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the Minister, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), intends to resign from office, describing the reports as false and malicious.

The clarification was contained in a public disclaimer by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, on Monday.

According to the statement, the minister’s office had become aware of what it described as fabricated reports alleging that General Musa was planning to step down from his position.

The office, however, insisted that the claims were baseless and urged Nigerians to disregard them.

The statement read: “The attention of the Office of the Honourable Minister of Defence has been drawn to a malicious and an entirely fabricated rumour circulating across various online and social media platforms alleging that the Honourable Minister, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) OFR, has expressed an intention to step down from his position.”

It added: “We wish to state unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms that these rumours are absolute falsehood borne out of complete mischief.”

The minister’s office further maintained that General Musa remains committed to his responsibilities and continues to focus on the country’s security objectives.

“General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) remains fully focused on his national security mandate, deeply committed to his duties, and completely dedicated to piloting the nation’s defence strategy with results already being seen.”

The statement urged members of the public to ignore the reports and cautioned media organisations and social media users against circulating unverified information.

“The general public is hereby urged to completely disregard this fake news. We strongly advise media outlets and internet users to desist from spreading unverified information and seek clarifications from the office.”
