The Commercial Truck Owners Association (COMTUA) has raised an alarm over alleged extortion of truckers at Ekeko Junction in Lagos State.

In a letter to authorities, the association claimed that a gang, claiming to represent the Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area, has been stopping trucks and collecting unauthorised levies.

COMTUA described the practice as illegal, noting that no local government is empowered to collect revenue from trucks following the introduction of wharf landing dues.

The association warned that the illegal collections are placing a financial burden on truck operators and creating an environment of fear that could threaten peace in the area.

COMTUA urged the authorities to take “immediate and decisive action” to remove the group and restore legitimate revenue collection processes.

The organisation expressed confidence that intervention by the relevant offices would resolve the issue swiftly and ensure order for all stakeholders.
