Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has declared his intention to seek the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

Bello made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he met with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders from the senatorial district. A video of the visit, in which he openly stated his ambition, was later posted on his verified Facebook page on Monday.

Addressing the gathering, the former governor formally accepted calls to contest the election, stating his readiness to represent the district at the National Assembly.

“I accept to run for the Senate in 2027,” the former governor said while addressing the gathering.

The event was attended by the current Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, as well as several political leaders and community figures.

According to a report by Peoples Daily, Governor Ododo urged Bello to heed appeals from party leaders and constituents who want him to contest the seat. The appeal was reportedly made in the presence of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland and other prominent leaders from the area.

Bello, who governed Kogi State between 2016 and 2024, remains an influential figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Separately, Kogi Watch reported that the Chairman of Okehi Local Government Area, Amoka Eneji, congratulated Bello on his declaration. Eneji reportedly praised the former governor for what he described as sustained efforts toward the unity and development of the Ebira people, noting that Bello’s leadership would remain a significant part of Ebiraland’s history.

The Kogi Central Senatorial District is currently represented by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who won the seat in the 2023 elections. Akpoti-Uduaghan, a lawyer and former governorship aspirant, became the first woman to represent the district in the Senate.
