Nigerians have commended the federal government for introducing the free interstate train service during festivities.
President Bola Tinubu also announced an extension to accommodate more passengers.
A cross section of passengers spoke with TVC News at the Moniya train station in Ibadan, Oyo state.
The free train service, an initiative by the Federal government to alleviate transport costs for citizens during the festive season was originally slated to end on 4th of January. But, surprisingly President Bola Tinubu announced an extension until the 7th of January, 2024.
Right on time, the train arrived the station at 10:45am, and passengers express their expectation that this idea continues. They believe the subsidy will make things easier for them considering the current economic situation.
An 80-year-old grandmother, Mary Adewale who just arrived from the United States, shared her journey experience. She says the government should strive to make life as comfortable for the people as it is in the U.S.
A family also decided to make the most of what they thought would be the final day of the ride by having a picnic in Ibadan, but to them the fun goes on.
While the festive period has concluded, there is a prevailing demand among Nigerians and this is for the government to extend such gestures beyond this season, to enhance the living condition of citizens through various sustainable means.
