The Young Lawyers League of Nigeria has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and set free the jailed former Head of the Presidential Pensions Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina and his son, Faisal on compassionate grounds.

Abudlrasheed Maina was Sentenced to 8 years imprisonment in 2021 by justice Okon Abang of the federal high court Abuja, for money laundering offences to the tune of N2billion in pension funds.

The court of appeal in 2023 upheld the sentence.

Mr Maina has 6 more years to complete to complete his sentence.

A group of lawyers under the name of young league lawyers in Nigeria are now seeking the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the case.

Their Chairman, Emmanuel Ekwe told newsmen that a letter to that effect has just been submitted to the president through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The intervention has become increasingly necessary due to the deteriorating health of Mr Maina and they are pleading that their demands be granted on both compassionate and health grounds.

The group is also praying president Tinubu to extend his prerogative of mercy to Faisal Maina son of Abudlrasheed Maina who was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment by the trial court, a sentence that was later reduced to 7 years by the appellate court.
