Gabonese citizens have taken to the streets to express their support for the military coup that deposed their president, Ali Bongo.
The coup occurred in the early hours of today, Wednesday after Ali Bongo was declared winner of the presidential election for a third term.
As soon as the results were made public, military officials commandeered national television to declare the election void and assume control in place of the president, who had been in government for 14 years.
Ali Bongo succeeded his father, who had governed for 42 years prior. For a total of 56 years, the Bongo family has been in power.
