Ecowas Authority worried over continued detention of Ivorien soldiers in Mali since July

 

Leaders of the Ecowas Authority of Heads of State and Government is determined to create a regional force that will intervene on anything that wants to threaten the peace and security of the region either in terms of terrorism or unconstitutional change of government

This was part of resolutions reached at the closed door meeting of the summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government just concluded in Abuja.

The recent happenings in the region, from the undemocratic takeover of government by the military to the increasing insecurity and organised crime in the region has made the leaders to agree that on a change of strategy.

They believe only drastic measures can bring the change the region so desires and needs

The leaders, rising from the 62nd ordinary session of the Ecowas Authority of Heads of State and Government took the decision to recalibrate the peace and security architecture of the region

The President of the Ecowas Commission who briefed Journalists after the summit says chiefs of defence staff of the region will work on the modalities of how the regional force will work

It is unclear at the moment if this will be a reintroduction of the regional peace keeping mission, ECOMOG or if it will take another form

Funding was also discussed by the leaders of the Authority, who agree that voluntary contributions have not really helped the region

Now they conclude there is need to ensure deliberate contributions by all members states in a bid to raise funds to meet the region’s action plan

On the ongoing transition negotiations, the Authority of Heads of State and Government decided that transitions must stay on course in the 3 affected countries

They insist there is no exception to the return to democracy as agreed in the transition

They also express concern over the continued detention of Ivorien soldiers in Mali since July 2022

The plans to tackle insecurity, if implemented will help the region in socioeconomic development
