The House of Representatives said it will investigate the recent developments among Nigerian traders in Ghana with a view to preventing another round of xenophobia attacks on Nigerians abroad.
More than 600 shops belonging to foreign traders, majority being Nigerians, were on December 1, locked up by members of the Ghana Union of
Traders Association at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle. That was not the first time an attempt to rid Ghananian markets of foreign traders, has occurred.
The Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora, Tolulope Akande-Sodipo, brought a motion of urgent public importance on the recent attacks on Nigerian traders in Ghana.
She said the attacks are not unconnected with the closure of Nigeria’s borders.
Other lawmakers are concerned about the role of the Ghananian police in the purported attacks
The House mandated its relevant committees to probe the incidents with a view to advising the Federal Government on possible ways of averting
another round of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.
