Medical doctors are concerned about the increasing cases of kidnapping of their colleagues across the country.
They disclosed this during this year’s Physicians’ Week in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The doctors say they are also working with the police to attend to gunshot victims without permit.
Available data released by the Nigerian Medical Association, shows that 48 doctors have been kidnapped in the last three years in Nigeria.
Two doctors were recently kidnapped in Nasarawa State and their whereabouts remain unknown.
This issue and others came up for discussion at the Physicians’ week celebration in Akure, capital Ondo State.
National President of the Nigeria Medical Association, said kidnapping of members of the union is becoming worrisome.
At the lecture, the need for government to provide special funds for the care of the unknown patients was stressed.
Victims of gunshots, road traffic accidents, or those with medical conditions like cardiovascular diseases, are under this category.
Chairman of the occasion, a former Governor of Ondo State, called for proper funding of the health sector and provision of special care for the unknown patient.
The State Governor, represented by his Deputy, said medical doctors and other health workers need better welfare.
Other speakers at the event want government to adequately fund health care.
Members of the NMA demand that the federal government accord desired attention to the situation where some patients could not access health care due to situations beyond their control.
Though they are referred to as unknown patients, they are still citizens who deserve to be kept alive before any other consideration.
