The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, said it seized smuggled items worth more than N107m (One hundred and seven million naira) within the last two months.
The items include bags of parboiled rice, sugar,cartons of spaghetti, kegs of vegetable oil and used cars. The comptroller explains that the 72 seizures were made in the last two months as a result of the commitment of the officers and men of the customs service.
Smuggling in Katsina despite the renewed commitment of the government to stop rice Importation is still a challenge as items are concealed in different forms to cross the borders.
The comptroller equally confirmed that a lot is now being done to sensitize border communities on the ills of smuggling and the need to comply with laws of the land.
Nigeria stands the chance of becoming an exporter of rice and palm oil in the nearest future if issues of smuggling can be tackled.
The comptroller equally reassured the officers of the unit of his zeal to reward excellence.
