President Muhammadu Buhari has given automatic employment to one hundred and sixty eight former corps members and also scholarships up to Doctorate level in Nigerian universities of their choice.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who represented the president announced the offer at the combined 2015/2016/2017 President’s National Youth Service Corps Honours Award which held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja.
Correspondent Mariah Olasehinde reports that the event was organised for corps members who served in the sets of 2015, 2016, and 2017.
The President’s National Youth Service Corps Honours Award was instituted in 1974 to encourage corps members to contribute to the overall national development by embarking on community development projects.
Former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, who created the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 1973, was also in attendance among other dignitaries
Speaking on behalf of the President, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo disclosed that the award recipients would be absorbed into the Federal Civil Service.
On his part, the outgoing Director-General of NYSC said the award was recognition of teamwork, honesty, loyalty, devotion to duty and creativity.
Fifteen former corps members who suffered disability during their service year were also recognised under the NYSC Hope Alive programme.
There was also the National Council for Women Affairs Award to three best female ex-corpers for the years under review
