Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has stated categorically that his country is not a battlefield for other countries.
He was responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments, saying that it was important to keep a U.S. military presence in Iraq so that Washington can keep a close eye on Iran.
“There are no American military bases in Iraq. We have said that more than once. There is no SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) between the United States of America and Iraq as mentioned by some media outlets”
“We don’t accept Iraq being the battlefield of a side waging a war against someone”
Such comments have been met with strong opposition from Iraq. During the press conference, Mahdi stressed that Iraq refuses to be used to bring harm to other countries.
