A rush hour stampede at the railway station in the Indian financial hub of Mumbai has killed at least 22 people and wounded more than 30.
The police say the cause of the stampede at the Elphinstone railway station amid a heavy downpour is being investigated.
A witness who was injured in the incident said the stampede took place after the cloudburst caught commuters off guard, prompting scores to scurry for cover under the roof of the station’s pedestrian overbridge.
A majority of Mumbai’s working population depends on suburban railways as the city faces long traffic jams, lacks parking spaces and has poor road conditions.
