The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended nine students for involvement in examination malpractice and submission of forged results, in a decisive move to uphold academic integrity.

In a statement on Tuesday, the university registrar, Chukwuka Icha, said the decision was reached during the 252nd senate meeting, following detailed reports from the ad hoc Senate Committee on Examination Malpractice and the Senate Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

“After reviewing the reports and recommendations of the committees, the management resolved that the affected students should be suspended for two academic sessions and the suspension will take effect from the 2024/2025 academic year,” the statement read.

Five of the suspended students, all from the Pharmacy Department, include Akwuba Enestina and Udom Iboro (300-level), Nwankwo Daniel (200-level), and Ore Israel and Chisom Ejafa (500-level). The remaining four, Lazarus Ebogo (Home Economics), Ele Godwin (Zoology), Ofem Patrick (Science Laboratory Technology), and Makailu Pamilo (Linguistics and Communication Studies) were found guilty of submitting forged results.

The university has directed heads of departments, deans, and the acting chief security officer to ensure strict compliance with the suspensions, signaling a no-tolerance stance against academic dishonesty.
