Tijani Ogunlende, son of late Nigerian music icon and actress Onyeka Onwenu, has paid tribute to his mother on the first anniversary of her passing.

In an emotional Instagram post on Wednesday, Tijani shared a photo of the late star with the caption: “A year ago, today. RIP Mom. July 30 2024.”

The post marks exactly one year since the death of Onwenu, widely known as the Elegant Stallion, who died on 30 July 2024 at the age of 72.

She passed away shortly after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Emzor Pharmaceuticals chairperson Stella Okoli in Lagos.

Onwenu reportedly slumped while returning to her seat following her performance and was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island, where she was confirmed dead.

The celebrated singer and actress was laid to rest a month later, on 30 August 2024, at Ebony Vaults and Gardens in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The burial was conducted privately in line with her wishes, with one of her sons placing a Bible on her casket as she was laid to rest.

Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned several decades and sectors, including music, film, journalism and public service.

She was renowned for timeless songs such as One Love and starred in films including Conspiracy, Half of a Yellow Sun, and Lionheart.

She also served as executive director of the National Centre for Women Development.

The trailblazing entertainer is survived by her two sons, who continue to honour her legacy both privately and publicly.
