Rivers Rerun: INEC pledges support for Special Investigating Panel

Image result for INEC boss and Police IGNigeria’s election management body has promised to cooperate fully with the Special Investigating Panel digging into cases of infractions in last year’s re run parliamentary election in Rivers state.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yaqub gave the assurance while receiving the panel in Abuja.

TVC News Correspondent, Joke Adisa reports that two weeks after its inauguration, the fifteen-member joint investigating committee of Police and the DSS is at the INEC headquarters to gather information that will aid the discharge of its assignment.

INEC Chairman is particularly delighted by the panel’s visit and underscores the importance of security in the conduct of elections.

He says the commission has so far received one hundred and twenty case files from the Nigeria Police, out of which sixty one, have been successfully prosecuted.

He says the Commission has begun an administrative review of what transpired in Rivers and is determined to deal with erring staff.

The INEC Chief assures the team of commission’s resolve to cooperate with the committee

The meeting later went into a closed door which lasted barely fifteen minutes.

The committee is to among others, conduct a thorough investigation into the role of security agents before, during and after the election.

It will also conduct a forensic analysis on the audio report credited to Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike.

The panel will equally probe the violence that marred the exercise in which two police officers were gruesomely murdered.

The panel has up to January the seventeenth to submit its report.
