Member representing Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro federal constituency of Rivers state, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, has commended the federal government for its efforts to immortalise King Jaja of Opobo.

The lawmaker gave the commendation at the inauguration of the technical committee on King Jaja of Opobo Cultural and Historical Centre.

He was the first king of Opobo and the founder Opobo city-state in present day Rivers State.

He was a slave who worked his way out of slavery.

Born in Umuduruoha, Amaigbo, in the present day Imo state in the year 1821, his actual birth name is unknown,  likewise the identity of his true parents.

But he rose to become the Jaja of Opobo and his bravery as King left footprints in the sand of time.

Rivers State member, Awaji-Inombek Abiante has been a lead lobbyist for the recognition and immortalisation of a man whose achievements outlived him.

Now, the government is set to heed the calls of sons and daughters of the state as it inaugurates the technical committee that will ensure the creation of an Arts and culture centre in the memory of King Jaja of Opobo.

Government says the centre will give exposure to the community and immortalise the great leader through research and let the world know the heritage of the people.

It insists the project is crucial in the preservation of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

Lawmakers from the state are excited about this latest development after more than seven years of agitations and lobbying.

The state delegation to the office of the minister of Arts, culture and creative economy  is led by the Paramount Ruler of Opobo, Dandeson Douglas, The team appreciates the honour.
