The Jigawa State Police Command has taken decisive action against violent protesters, arresting 212 suspects in connection with the recent unrest sparked by the nationwide protests.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Tijjani Abdullahi, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the security situation and measures taken to maintain law and order.

The nationwide protests, which commenced on August 1, rapidly escalated as protesters became destructive, and ignored all appeals to demonstrate peacefully.

The situation spiralled out of control, resulting in the destruction of government properties, disruption of economic activities, and spread of violence to other local government areas.

To restore order and ensure public safety, the police deployed additional personnel and equipment, while the state government declared a 24-hour curfew across the state.

CP Abdullahi said Seventy-four suspects have been charged to court, and some looted items recovered including, motorcycles, tricycles, bicycles, bags of fertilizer, chairs, cartons of mosquito nets, rice, and office furniture.

In a related development, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sport, and Culture Sagir Musa, disclosed that the government is closely monitoring the situation and is working closely with security agencies in this regard.

He says, the outcome of their engagement with police, army and other security agencies will determine if  the state government will consider relaxing the curfew.

Sagir Musa insists the situation is under control, as the government and security agencies will continue to work together to prevent any breakdown of law and order and maintain peace in the state.
