The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) has called on the Federal Government to abandon Nigeria’s long-standing Non-Aligned foreign policy, declaring that it has outlived its usefulness in today’s rapidly evolving global power dynamics.
PeacePro’s Executive Director, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, in a statement argued that Nigeria must adopt a new foreign policy framework known as “Nigeria-Aligned”, designed to prioritise the country’s security, economic interests and sovereignty above diplomatic sentiment and historical nostalgia.
Hamzat explained that the global system is no longer defined by Cold War-era neutrality but by intense competition over security, energy, technology, trade, migration and geopolitical influence.
He noted that Nigeria’s continued adherence to symbolic non-alignment has weakened its bargaining power, diminished its international relevance and exposed the country to growing vulnerabilities.
“Non-alignment once protected Nigeria’s independence. Today, it is mistaken for indecision. We must stop drifting and start negotiating. Our foreign policy must deliver security, jobs, technology transfer and strategic leverage, not just photo opportunities and empty communiqués,” Hamzat stated.
PeacePro stressed that while Nigeria must maintain engagement with all global powers, its loyalty should remain firmly rooted in national interest.
The organisation added that no country can claim leadership abroad while struggling to secure its territory and stabilise its economy at home.
The group therefore called for a comprehensive foreign policy reset, insisting that a shift from Non-Aligned to Nigeria-Aligned is essential for Nigeria to reclaim its leadership position in Africa, command greater international respect and safeguard its future amid growing global uncertainties.
