The Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has identified the mass distrust of government by citizens as the key factor underguarding Nigeria’s ongoing underdevelopment.

He is also worried that there appears to be no lasting solution to the security challenges bedevilling the country, and this is likely to remain unresolved if the distrust on the part of citizens persist.

He stated this at the 70th anniversary commemoration Lecture of the National Association of Sea Dogs in Abuja.

The state of insecurity has doubt affected every aspect of the country’s national life.

A major problem is the lack of trust citizens have in government officials looking after their interests.

This Citizens Summit, an initiative of OurVotesCount, an advocacy programme, aimed at advocating for a “purposeful democratic election, is a critical first-step to challenging the ills militating against the attainment of the full potentials of Nigeria

It has brought together these eminent personalities to propose solutions to the challenges facing the country.

John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, says there’s a major dissatisfaction among Nigerians on different aspects of the economy.

They agree that the government will need to do a lot to regain this trust of it’s citizens which is necessary for any government to function.

They advised that social services under government control, have suffered major neglect, whether in education or health services, roads or sanitation, and need to be revived as a matter of urgency.
