The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has disclosed that the amount of Crude Oil being stolen in the country has decreased to 5,000 barrels per day.

This decline has allowed oil production to increase to 1.75 million barrels per day as of January 2025.

The Chief Executive of the Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, revealed this information during the Renewed Hope Global Town Hall Conference in Abuja, highlighting the reforms and accomplishments in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector achieved by the current administration.

Olaide Shonola, the Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Communication, had issued a press statement at the weekend highlighting that this achievement was made possible through a combination of both kinetic and non-kinetic interventions.

Komolafe stated that due to the intervention highlighted by Shonola at the Weekend, crude oil production, which fell to 1.1 million barrels per day (bopd) in 2022, has now risen to 1.7 million bopd.

“Oil theft that led to a drastic drop in production to 1.1 million BOPD in 2022. He, however, noted that through kinetic and non-kinetic interventions, oil theft has significantly reduced to 5,000 BOPD, leading to a steady production increase to 1.7 million BOPD.

“In May 2023, the Commission unveiled its 10-year Regulatory and Corporate Strategic Plan (2023–2033), followed by a Regulatory Action Plan for 2024, detailing key industry reforms.”
