Today is Mother’s Day. It is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in the society.

Nigerians have been urged to stay away from each other and keep observing social distancing on Mother’s Day.

Gender Rights Advocate, Tessy Biobaku stated that the best present we could give our elderly mother or grandmother this season is to stay away from them, as those over 70 are said to be at a greater risk of contracting COVID-19.

“Giving your mum a hug and a kiss on Mother’s Day is something many of us take for granted, but what most would consider a normal gesture has now become an impossibility for millions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Although asking people to stay away from each other created anxiety and unease, we as a people must find other ways to show our appreciation.

“I’ll recommend buying them a device with Skype or whatsapp video – then use it regularly.”

“Kudos to mothers in the health service and also those in retail outlets making sure people could still access fresh food”, she stated.

Nigeria ’s cases of the virus increased from 12 to 26 on Sunday with almost all the cases having their travel history linked to high – risk zones of the virus in Europe , Asia , the Americas , and the Middle East .
