Nigeria has retained its seat on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) after securing 163 votes during the 42nd General Assembly held in Montréal, Canada. All 193 ICAO member states participated in the election.
The ICAO Council, which serves as the organization’s main decision-making body, consists of 36 member states elected for three-year terms.
Nigeria was re-elected under Part II of the Council, which is designated for countries that contribute significantly to international aviation infrastructure and services.
Nigeria’s re-election strengthens Africa’s presence on the Council, with Egypt and South Africa also returning under the same category.
Together, these countries will continue to influence global aviation policies related to safety, air navigation, and environmental standards.
Other nations elected under Part II include Argentina, Colombia, Denmark, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, and Switzerland.
The ICAO Council is divided into three categories:
- Part I: States of chief importance in international air transport
- Part II: States with significant contributions to aviation infrastructure
- Part III: States selected to ensure balanced geographic representation
