The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved labour matters affecting their members in universities and inter-university centres.

In a letter dated 15 September 2025 and addressed to the Minister of Education, JAC accused the government of failing to act on agreements and pledges made at a meeting with the minister on 4 July 2025.

The unions said their grievances include the unjust disbursement of the N50 billion earned allowances, non-payment of two months’ withheld salaries and 25/35 per cent salary increments, and the delayed renegotiation of the 2009 Federal Government/NASU-SSANU agreements.

According to the letter signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the July meeting resolved to set up a tripartite committee of the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission and JAC to address the skewed distribution of earned allowances.

But the unions said no progress had been made.

They also accused the government of sidelining non-teaching staff during ongoing renegotiations of the 2009 agreements, even as discussions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had reportedly been concluded.

“In light of the persistent unresolved issues, and the apparent lack of responsiveness from the government to our legitimate concerns, we are compelled to serve a formal notice of seven (7) days effective from Monday, 15 September, 2025, failing which members of NASU and SSANU would embark on a series of legitimate industrial actions including strikes to press home our demands,” the letter stated.

The unions urged the Minister of Education to intervene urgently to avert another round of disruptions in the nation’s universities.
