The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has thwarted a planned large-scale terrorist attack in Zamfara State, neutralising over 20 armed terrorists and destroying more than 21 motorcycles in a decisive air interdiction operation.
The operation, conducted under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, targeted terrorists south of Mai-Galma in Maru Local Government Area following a distress call and credible intelligence reports.
The terrorists, who had already killed several farmers and abducted civilians—including women and children—were reportedly preparing to launch coordinated attacks on nearby communities.
NAF aircraft carried out armed reconnaissance in the area and identified over 30 motorcycles carrying heavily armed terrorists entering a forest.
The terrorists opened fire on the aircraft, prompting a precision strike that destroyed multiple motorcycles and eliminated a number of the assailants.
Following the airstrike, ground troops were deployed to consolidate gains from the operation.
They confirmed the neutralisation of more than 20 terrorists and the destruction of enemy assets.
However, two local vigilantes lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries during the exchange.
The NAF expressed deep regret over the loss of the vigilantes and pledged continued collaboration with local communities to enhance security and rescue efforts.
Search operations are ongoing to locate kidnapped villagers believed to be held in the surrounding forest.
The Air Force reiterated its commitment to civilian safety, stating that all operations are conducted in line with international humanitarian law and the Nigerian Air Force Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMRAP), which prioritises the protection of non-combatants in conflict zones.
Investigations into the incident continue, with the NAF assuring the public of intensified efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and restore peace in the region.
