The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy has partnered with the National Sports Commission to initiate a comprehensive initiative aimed at developing infrastructure to support Nigeria’s creative and sporting industries.
This landmark partnership was solidified during a meeting in Abuja on Thursday between Minister, Hannatu Musa Musawa and National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko.
Hannatu Musawa underscored that sports and entertainment—especially music, film, and the arts—are key areas of interest for Nigerian youth.
She emphasised that both sectors have the power to inspire and unite young people, but their potential is hampered by inadequate infrastructure.
To address this issue, both organizations intend to work together to create a comprehensive ecosystem that combines sports, art, tourism, and the creative economy.
To nurture talent and grow the sector, proposed developments include creative hubs, cultural centers, gaming and animation facilities, museums, and concert venues.
The Minister stressed the need for a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to kickstart the initiative and unlock new opportunities for Nigerian youth.
“Sports and the creative sectors provide young people with purpose and identity,” she said. “Together, they have the power to unify the nation. A joint approach will yield greater impact.”
Musawa mentioned key projects already in the works under the Renewed Hope Cultural Project, such as the Equestrian City and other cultural hubs.
She advocated for synergy between both commissions rather than working in isolation, highlighting the value of leveraging each other’s strengths.
In his remarks, Mallam Dikko agreed that sports, culture, and creativity are deeply connected and instrumental in breaking societal barriers.
He pointed out that both music and sports are shared passions among over 200 million Nigerians, making them powerful tools for unity and growth.
Dikko expressed support for the Ministry’s plans, noting their alignment with the Sports City vision, which aims to create spaces where creativity and athletics intersect.
“We have the mandate to tap into the potential of the sports economy, just as the Ministry does with the creative economy. It’s only logical to collaborate,” he said.
He pledged the commission’s support by offering access to facilities, land, and resources to help bring the proposed projects to life.
This strategic alliance is expected to boost Nigeria’s cultural and sports infrastructure, foster economic development, promote unity, and provide meaningful opportunities for young people nationwide.
