The strongest earthquake to hit Mexico in a century has left at least 10 people dead. The 8.4-magnitude earthquake struck 60 miles off the southern coast of Mexico, sparking tsunami warnings across the world.
The death toll is widely expected to rise as the extent of the damage becomes clearer.
A small 3.3ft tsunami has already been detected and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre warned it could grow to 12ft.
Terrified locals ran out onto the streets as the earthquake struck just before midnight and images emerging on social media reveal the severe damage suffered by some parts of southern Mexico.
Mexico’s President, Enrique Pena Nieto says at least 1 million people had been left without electricity after the quake, but power had since been restored to 800,000 of them.
He urged people to be vigilant and to check gas supplies as well as walls and columns.
