The Republic of Liberia has appointed Mr. Dapo Akinosun (SAN) as its Honorary Consul in Lagos, entrusting him with the task of advancing diplomatic and commercial relations in Nigeria’s economic nerve centre.
He succeeds Dr. Opral Mason Benson.
The appointment positions Akinosun as Liberia’s official representative within the Lagos consular jurisdiction, with a mandate to safeguard the welfare of Liberian citizens and drive stronger economic engagement between Liberia and Nigeria.
As Honorary Consul, Akinosun is expected to promote trade, investment, tourism, and foster cultural, educational and scientific exchanges between both countries.
Head of Media, Mr. Oduntan Kehinde Ogundimu, described the assumption of duty as a strategic development for Liberia’s engagement in Nigeria.
According to him, the move “marks a significant milestone for Liberian interests in Nigeria’s commercial hub and reflects that country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding economic cooperation.”

In a formal letter conveying the appointment, Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mme Sara Beysolow Nyanti, said the decision was in recognition of Akinosun’s commitment to deepening friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Responding to his appointment, Akinosun said: “I am deeply honoured to represent Liberia in Nigeria, a country that shares not just a border, but a deep history and kinship with our people.”
He outlined his priorities to include promoting investment opportunities, creating a conducive climate for Nigerian investors in Liberia, protecting the interests of Liberians resident in Lagos, and strengthening people-to-people connections.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria with over three decades of experience, Akinosun is a founding partner of SimmonsCooper Partners.
He has served on the boards of corporations spanning foreign investment, banking and finance, energy and arbitration, with notable expertise in capital market trading, oil sector privatisation and joint ventures.
He is also a fellow and member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators and the International Bar Association.
The Honorary Consulate in Lagos serves as a diplomatic bridge for the Liberian community in Nigeria while facilitating trade and broader economic collaboration between the two West African nations.
