The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a strong warning to event centres, nightclubs, lounges, and organisers of social gatherings across the state to desist from obstructing public roads and causing traffic disruptions.

The warning was delivered by LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, during an inspection tour of key traffic corridors over the weekend. He expressed concern over the persistent use of public roads as overflow parking spaces during events, leading to congestion and hardship for road users.

“No individual or organisation has the right to convert public roads into private parking lots. Any venue found obstructing traffic through illegal parking or road encroachment will face strict sanctions and possible prosecution,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He directed all zonal commanders and monitoring units to step up patrols, particularly during weekends and festive periods, and ensure full enforcement of traffic laws at social venues.

The LASTMA boss also urged venue operators to work with certified traffic officers and develop proper traffic management plans in advance of large events.

“Gridlock caused by unregulated gatherings undermines public wellbeing and disrupts the city’s economic flow,” he said, reaffirming that enforcement would be impartial and uncompromising.

Residents were encouraged to report violations through the agency’s emergency hotline: 0800-00-LASTMA (080000527862).

Bakare-Oki called for greater civic responsibility from stakeholders in the hospitality and entertainment sectors, noting that compliance with traffic rules is vital for maintaining a safe and livable Lagos.
