The Kano State Government has released an additional N5 billion for the payment of gratuities and death benefits to retired civil servants and the families of deceased workers.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the disbursement on Wednesday, describing it as the fifth tranche of payments under his administration, bringing the total amount paid so far to N27 billion.

“Today marks another momentous day as we release N5 billion as the fifth tranche of gratuities and death benefits for retired civil servants and their families,” the governor stated in a post on his official X handle.

“This latest disbursement brings the total payments to N27 billion, out of the N48 billion backlog of liabilities inherited from the previous administration.

“This initiative is a testament to our administration’s resolve to restore dignity and justice to workers who dedicated their lives to serving the state.

“I am hopeful that we will clear all outstanding gratuity and death benefits, totalling N21 billion, before the end of this tenure.

“Furthermore, I believe these payments have significantly boosted morale among civil servants and reinforced public confidence in the government’s commitment to welfare,” he added.

Governor Yusuf has made clearing the backlog of gratuity and death benefits a key part of his administration’s welfare agenda, after inheriting significant outstanding liabilities upon assuming office.

The government says it remains committed to fully settling the remaining N21 billion in owed benefits before the end of its term.
