The Director General of the National information development agency (NITDA) says the adoption of Internet protocol version 6, (IPv6), will enable the tracing of IP addresses to it unique user, unlike the IPv4.
He said this at the IPv6 digital summit held in Abuja
Internet protocol version 6, is the next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) standard intended to replace IPv4, the protocol many Internet services still use today.
IPv6 is a well-established protocol that enables networks to connect more devices and expand their networks without relying on additional resources.
In Nigeria, there are over 3 million IP addresses, with over 200 Nigerians using 1 IP.
This is due to the usage of IPv4 which allows more devices connected to one IP address.
The adoption of IPv6 is important as it will helps address cyber crime by ensuring every device is uniquely identified.
Discussions at this summit centred on the implementation of the IPv6, challenges, opportunities and how it can help improve e-governance and build more resilient network.
There was a presentation of a white paper on the IPv6 that will guide its adoption from 1% currently recorded by Nigeria to 100%.
Nigeria can improve the resilience and usage of its Internet by reviewing its telecommunications-related policies, regulations, and other factors that discourage service providers from investing in the Internet infrastructure that will facilitate better connectivity.
