Political parties in the Federal Capital Territory can now officially begin campaigning ahead of the 2026 Area Council elections, INEC has announced.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the official commencement of campaigns for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said political parties contesting in the elections may begin their campaigns from 24 September 2025 and end at midnight on 19 February 2026, in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and the Commission’s timetable.

INEC reminded political parties, candidates and their supporters that the law prohibits the use of abusive language, physical attacks or destruction of opponents’ campaign materials during rallies, processions and meetings. Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act also oblige all parties and candidates to enjoy unhindered access to public facilities for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, rallies and meetings.

The Commission further cautioned against the misuse of incumbency, pointing to Section 95(2) of the Act, which forbids giving undue advantage or disadvantage to any candidate or party.

The FCT Area Council elections are scheduled to hold on Saturday, 21 February 2026.
