The Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR) has congratulated the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Ismail Abba Yusuf, on his appointment and confirmation by the Senate, while calling for sweeping reforms to reposition the commission.

The faith-based civil society organisation, which monitors and reports on Hajj and Umrah activities in Nigeria, said Ambassador Yusuf’s diplomatic background and prior involvement in Hajj operations place him in a strong position to address pressing challenges in the sector.

The group noted that his appointment comes at a time when NAHCON is contending with negative public perception that has, in its view, affected the commission’s credibility and its ability to effectively discharge its statutory responsibilities under the NAHCON Establishment Act 2006.

IHR urged the chairman to provide purposeful leadership aimed at rebranding the commission and restoring public confidence.

It also called for operational reforms aligned with global best practices among Hajj-participating countries, including the introduction of merit-based policies that prioritise service to pilgrims.

While acknowledging that expectations for the 2026 Hajj may be limited, given that most pre-Hajj arrangements were concluded prior to his appointment, the organisation encouraged the NAHCON chairman to begin laying the groundwork for long-term structural reforms to enhance transparency, accountability and professionalism in subsequent operations.

The group further advised the commission to broaden stakeholder engagement across the Hajj and Umrah sector, provided such consultations safeguard the interests of Nigerian pilgrims.

Reaffirming its role as both a civil society organisation and a dedicated Hajj and Umrah news platform, IHR pledged to continue offering constructive criticism through public and administrative channels to improve Hajj administration and service delivery.

It emphasised that protecting the interests of Nigerian pilgrims remains its foremost priority, noting the spiritual significance of Hajj as the fifth pillar of Islam.
