Some residents of Boluwaji, a community located in Ibadan, Oyo state stretch of the Lagos Ibadan Expressway have decried the incessant killing of people by reckless drivers over-speeding on the newly constructed Section of the highway.
They are appealing to the Federal Government to construct pedestrian bridges along the stretch of the road to end continuous accidents.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway which has been undergoing reconstruction in the last nine years is almost attaining completion.
Although, the rehabilitation of the 120km road has made travelling easy for it’s users, but residents of this community say the highway has become a death trap as lives are being lost on a daily basis by impatient drivers.
They risk their lives to get to the other side of the road.
Now, they are asking the Government to construct pedestrian bridges in major bus stops along the road.
They said efforts have been made to reach relevant authorities for assistance but yielded no result.
These volunteers say they face hard times to ensure people are safe to cross the road.
Speaking on behalf of government, the Federal Controller of works in Ogun state who also doubles as the Engineers Representative of the Lagos Ibadan Expressway Section 2
She clears the air on the construction of pedestrian bridges, saying it is already part of the plans made for the project.
As road users and commuters await the Federal Government to address their demands, it is also advisable they ply the way carefully to prevent further disasters before their demands are met.
The Lagos/Ibadan Expressway which is the busiest road in Nigeria had suffered neglect from successive governments since 1999 until the election of Muhammadu Buhari as President in 2015.
He had vowed on his election to ensure Infrastructure renewal across the Country and also ensure that highly strategic and important Roads like the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway are made motorable to ease movement of Goods and Services across the Country.
