First Lady Calls For Action On Gender Based Violence

Nigeria’s first Lady Oluremi Tinubu says  Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is one of the greatest ills against humanity that requires collective efforts to eradicate it from the society.

She made the remarks at the flag off of 2024 Enugu state August Women meeting, with the theme: Eliminating abuse to foster a healthy society, held in Enugu.

August meeting is an annual congress held by women of the South East region,  mostly in the month of August.

It is a huge homecoming annual event where  Married and unmarried Igbo women from the cities and the diaspora return to their matrimonial villages to meet with their local counterparts and discuss socioeconomic, cultural initiatives, conflict resolution, community development and human development.

At the flag off of this year’s event at Michael Okpara Square Enugu, the women are decorated in the rich colorful attires, display different cultural artifacts and local cuisines.

Wife of the president commended Igbo women for their institutional framework of Mobilizing women in communities  for social, community economic development.

Represented by the wife of the Vice President, she advocates renewed vigour to eliminate children and gender abuse to foster a peaceful society.

Wife of Enugu state governor admonished women to uphold the philosophy of the meeting which was design to enhance social cultural and economic development of their various communities.

The women used the occasion to display their various rich customary heritage  and farm produce as their harvest in the season.

The president’s wife announced plans to begin a new  social investment Programme that will touch lives of vulnerable groups in society.

The flag off of this year’s August meeting marks the commencement of individual, and communities women meetings that will showcase their rich cultural heritage with March parades from the 17 council areas women groups.
